Max's Deli has been a staple on the Highland Park restaurant scene for more than three and a half decades. Owner, operator, chef, and Highland Park native, Joey Morelli says that the deli chose him. Max's Deli is a family business, begun by Morelli's grandfather and later uncle before Morelli took over in 2011. Cooking has been a lifelong passion of Morelli, who first learned to cook as a child, making noodles with his grandmother. Max's tagline proudly proclaims "we're Italian Jews. Which means besides bickering... we're into food!" And food is something Max's has perfected. Offering a huge selection of New York City-style Jewish deli menu items, there is always something new to try. From the NYC water bagels to the brisket to the matzo ball soup, which Morelli affectionately calls "Jewish penicillin," each bite leaves you wanting more. When asked what his favorite Max's menu item was, Morelli pointed to the exceptionally popular "CBR," that is corned beef on rye, proudly noting that Max's sells over 1,500 lbs of corned beef each week. Beyond satisfying the hunger of Highland Park, Morelli has fed and taught thousands of children in Cambodia, Ukraine, and Mexico how to cook through his 501(c)(3), Joey's Food Fight. The next time you're wondering what to eat, consider stopping by Max's Deli for an unforgettable experience and vibrant atmosphere.
